Shelves 2

Part book shelves part dresser this piece for our oast house kitchen is adjustable for varied needs while hopefully remaining elegant as a whole. Before thicknessing the raw Oak and Ash timber in the wood store was indistinguishable and I was surprised to find I had such wide quarter sawn Ash planks to make the shelves, each with significant change in colour from heartwood to sapwood across their width. The verticals are English Oak, darker and more figured than American Oak. The design uses notched uprights of diminishing depth to support successive fixed shelves with intermediate adjustable shelves on dowels.

Uprights as delicate as possible to allow light through to the shelves and a minimum of horizontal members for cross bracing below the lower fixed shelves.

The parts laid out, showing the difference between the Oak and the Ash once prepared.

First assembly....

...and complete. Fixings, where needed at all are simple black phosphate screws.
